This is a list of 5 Top Handmade Selling Tips that you can use to start increasing your sales and helping your handmade shop thrive today.  This list is not in order of importance.  I placed this list in alphabetical order to help ensure that you read all of these tips.  Each tip is an important tool that you can use to improve your handmade shop.

Choose the Best Handmade Marketplace

One of the first steps you can take to ensure your handmade company’s success is to select the optimal marketplace to sell your handmade items.  Many people start by selling their products locally, but it is a good idea to eventually sell online to maximize exposure.  It is a good idea to start with a marketplace that is easy to navigate and also easy to set up your shop.

There are hundreds of handmade marketplaces online, but you need to make sure to select the best one starting out.  There are currently two websites that dominate the handmade marketplace.  These two websites are Handmade at Amazon and Etsy.  This community contains information for both of these marketplaces, but I currently recommend starting out with Etsy for several specific reasons.  The primary reasons to choose Etsy include the ease of setting up a shop, reasonable fees, and great traffic which helps sell a ton of handmade goods.  When most people think of handmade marketplaces, they think of Etsy.  Etsy has been around much longer than Handmade at Amazon, and Etsy focuses online on selling handmade goods.  Amazon mainly created Handmade at Amazon to compete with Etsy.  Amazon as a whole isn’t dedicated to handmade goods.  Amazon also charges huge fees!

Create a Company Culture and Identity

Many new handmade shop owners make a huge mistake; they rush through the beginning steps of opening their business.  This is because many people are focused on making money over creating a brand identity.  If you are just starting your business, avoid this mistake.  make sure to start by choosing an appropriate name.  All aspects of your handmade business need to revolve around your desired brand identity and culture.

Differentiate by Using Amazing Packaging

This is another area that many shop owners look over.  You can easily set your shop apart by providing excellent packaging. One great way to do this is to include a handwritten Thank You note with each order.  It doesn’t take very much extra time or money, and it makes a huge impression on your customers.  I also like to include a free item with our logo on. For instance, I like to include free koozies with each bottle opener that we sell.  Try to include something that is relate to the products you sell.  You obviously need to make sure to protect your products for shipping and make the packaging look professional.


Go Above & Beyond with Excellent Customer Service

This is well-known area that is focused on in many different guides.  This is self-explanatory.  Make sure to always take care of your customers, and put their satisfaction above profits.  If you do a great job of servicing your customers, the profits will come.  I actually lost money the first month I was in business because I focused on providing excellent customer service.  It paid off, and some of the early customers helped market my items for free!


Learn About Search Engine Optimization 

I could dedicate a whole website to SEO (search engine optimization).  You need to spend the time to master SEO on whatever marketplace you choose.  This is a free way to get a ton of extra traffic. The average handmade shop owner does not spend the time to understand this complicated subject. Shop owners that are able to master Google’s SEO will thrive over other companies and will receive much more traffic.  Each marketplace has its own search feature and has its own methods for mastering SEO.  Take the time to study this area and master it!

Master Social Media for Marketing

This is another area that deserves its own website.  It also deserves its own book.  Luckily, someone else has already written it.  I recently read Gary Vaynerchuk’s book, Jab, Jab, Jab, right Hook.  This book is excellent at explaining how to use each social media platform to improve your brand.  A majority of companies take a shortcut when it comes to understanding social media marketing.  You can definitely see this when you look at Facebook, Twitter, etc.  Handmade shops are definitely built to be marketed on several platforms, and they can thrive on Pinterest.  If you are marketing based on instinct, you are probably doing it wrong!  I have included a link to Gary Vaynerchuk’s book below.  It will take you to Amazon for purchase.  It is definitely worth the price!

Network with Other Business Owners

This is an under-utilized method of improving handmade shops.  I created the My Handmade Hub marketplace to help shop owners network with each other.  It can be as simple as messaging other handmade shop owners on your marketplace of choice.  Make sure to ask questions and work together to help each other grow.  Many successful shop owners received help from others when their company was small.  As a result, most people are open to giving free advice and helping you out, just ask!
